Watching it on TV, I am very disappointed both in terms of it as a sport and City-marketing event. A marathon is an excellent opportunity to show off a city but the “Cape Town Marathon”, as portrayed on TV, fails completely to achieve this. The route is uninspiring and the great features of the City are not well-displayed. It is not OK that atletes need to run through and among traffic, skip from pavement to road at 30k plus in the race, have to navigate around tight corners, dodge concrete obstacles on pavements, compete with people casually strolling directly on route, have one (sometimes half a lane) for athletes and marshals competing with motorcar traffic.
